Can Skin Moles Develop Into Cancerous Moles?

There are very few of us who don't have at least one mole on our body, in fact most people will have many more! Something like fifteen to twenty moles will feature somewhere on the body in the first twenty years of someone's life. However, one worry many people have is whether their skin moles can develop into cancerous moles.

I know it sounds a rather scary, but moles are actually classed as a tumor. This is also the most common type of tumor that is found in humans. Most skin moles are completely harmless, and the only problem they may cause, are in the way some people perceive themselves, especially if they have facial moles.

However, a few skin moles may be pre-cancerous and develop into a dangerous and problematic type of cancer. This type of mole is known as a dysplastic nevi. If you do have a skin mole that keeps coming back after you have had it removed, it is viable that it is a melanoma. These irregular growths are most commonly found in people who already have a genetic predisposition towards them. If you suspect you have a pre-cancerous mole, you should contact your doctor immediately. Here are some of the signs that your skin mole could be dangerous. Please keep in mind that this is not a full list.

Cancerous skin moles may have one, some, or all of the following qualities:

- It may be of an inconsistent colour or shape

- The mole may bleed spontaneously

- Be larger in size than a eraser found on the end of a pencil

- Will change in size and colour

- Cancerous moles can be painful or itchy

- May have inflammatory changes independent of any external factors

I would just like to emphasize again that most skin moles are quite innocent, so don't get worried unless something is very obvious. If you have any moles that display any of the above qualities, contact your doctor as soon as possible. The quicker you can deal with any moles that are worrying you, or that do turn out to be pre-cancerous moles, the easier it will be for everybody.
