If you have been in an accident that has affected your mobility or have medical problems related to age or joints in your legs that prevent you from climbing stairs then you need not confine yourself to a single floor in your home. Modern technology now provides you with various options in stair lifts that can truly lift you to the next level.

These lifts are fitted on tracks on one side of your staircase and move diagonally over your stairs to help you reach the next floor. The lifts are operated by cables or usually by rack and pinion gear systems that help you to go up or come down your stairs at a safe and leisurely pace. While most models of stair lifts are available with folding seats and footrests, you can also find models that can allow you to travel whilst standing in case you have problems bending your knees or sitting in chairs. These lifts are anyway extremely easy to use since you simply need to toggle a joystick fitted on the armrest of the chair. You can also allow another member of your family to control the lift with the help of a remote control.

If your area is prone to sudden storms that knock out power lines at regular intervals then you should choose a model with a built-in battery that is good enough for a few runs up and down the stairs even if there is no power in your neighborhood. You should choose a lift with in-built safety features such as slow-start and stop, automatic braking in case of any obstacle in your path, automatic slowing on curves or turns, etc. The lift should also not start when your seat is in the swivel position since that would indicate that you are either getting on or off the lift. This will ensure that you always remain safe while operating the lift and will eliminate jerky motions while traveling up and down those stairs.

The cost of your lift and its installation will increase if you have a curved staircase with additional landings instead of a simple, straight staircase. Your cost will also increase if you choose a model with a higher number of features including self-diagnostic features that can display any problems on a small screen fitted on the control pod. This will make it easier for service personnel to sort out the problem in an instant although it will also increase the initial cost of the lift. You can also explore other options to lower your cost such as opting for refurbished stair lifts or can even hire one for a short time if you know that you would be getting back on your feet within a short time. You will however, have to pay installation charges on your hired lift and might be left with ungainly holes in your stairs or carpet after un-installation.

If you have short-term or long-term mobility problems that prevent you from using the stairs in your home or office then there are various options in stair lifts that could ease your frustration and help you navigate in a safe and smooth manner. You should compare your requirements with the choices available in the market before choosing a lift that offers years of service without any problems.
