There are many heart rate monitors in the market for runners to get themselves into shape before a marathon run. One such watch is the Polar RS200. This watch doesn't cost as much as it used to but it is a very versatile watch that can be used for almost any training conditions and not just during your runs.
When you buy your RS200 heart rate monitor, it really doesn't look like an impressive watch at first glance but you'll be surprised that a watch at this price does offer quite a bit in terms of features. It will definitely track your heart rate, measure your max heart rate and heart rate training zones. Apart from being water resistant up to 50 metres, this watch also comes with Polar Ownzone and Polar Owncal feature. The Polar Owncal feature shows your energy expenditure at a single exercise session and also accumulated expenditure. Another feature call the Polar Ownzone feature also helps determine an individual exercise zone, calorie counter and goal management.
Another great feature which I frequently use in this watch is the Polar Ownzone. This feature enables you to determine an individual exercise zone and tailors your training towards meeting your goals. It also has the ability to define your own multiple heart rate zones to your own specification, and then define your own exercise protocols based on those zones, a feature that I find really useful especially if I want to specify a training for a marathon run. If you are training for a 10km marathon run, then this watch can do that for you! Another feature that I really like is the ability to do interval training. I find that rather useful but this watch only allows you to do up to three exercise segments.
One thing I really like about this watch is the ability track my training progress and then uploading onto my computer. I like being able to see how my training program has improved my cardiovascular fitness and how it gets me closer towards achieving my goals for a particular run. This feature might sound a bit complicated for those who have not used a heart rate monitor but it is not that difficult to understand those features.
A few things I like to see improved is the buzzing sound that is quite audible especially when transferring training data. The battery life is also not that good although the watch is able to withstand almost any training conditions. It only lasted 9 months for me. I had to fork out extra money for this. This is something that Polar should definitely address and fix in future models. As for water resistant, I haven't actually tested it beyond the depth of 10m yet but it hasn't given me any problems. The Polar RS200 is a mid price watch with pretty good feature and I would still recommend getting it for your training.
