Not long ago, Restless Leg Syndrome generally went unreported primarily due to the lack of public awareness. This is a very unique condition which provides no medical ways to diagnose or even a physical means to prove it even existence. Historically, this has been a condition that was ignored as a nervous condition with considerable resistance from the medical community, as well as, patients alike to be considered as an actual disease.

The symptoms of Restless Legs can range from a mild discomfort to an extreme pain in the legs resulting in a strong desire to move the legs to provide some form of relief. The symptoms usually occur at night right before bed time which leads to a serious problem with sleeping. This lack of sleep has a significant impact on concentration during the day causing serious problems at work and performing daily chores. Because this condition is not life threatening it doesn't receive the same level of urgency as with more harmful conditions.

The RLS Foundation conducted a study, using more than eleven hundred volunteers, and found that nearly 60% of the volunteers were not even aware of the disease. It wasn't until they were given a detailed description of the disease that almost a quarter of them stated that they or someone they knew had experienced the symptoms associated with RLS.

Today's medical community, under the direction of The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), continue to try to identify the root cause of the disease in hopes that this discovery will lead to a permanent cure. Their objective is to better understand this disease that will lead to improved methods to diagnose and treat this condition. Additionally, these attempts have given good cause to believe that this disease is genetic due to the number of family members who share in the symptoms.

However, just recently a major medical institute conducted controlled studies on over five thousand volunteers, from ages 25 to 75, to discover the root cause allowing them to develop a real cure. What they discovered is that RLS is tied to the central nervous system. Additionally, 93.7% of those suffering from RLS share in a bodily deficiency. Their bodies failed to produce a sufficient amount of a critical mineral. A mineral that was found in abundance in the bodies of those who did not suffer from this condition.

Ever since this condition began to surface, there have been large leaps of progress and a lot more effort in educating people who believe they have Restless Leg Syndrome. There are a number of medical professionals who believe there is a direct link between RLS and other diseases such as Parkinson's disease or diabetes. They found that the treatment for these diseases also provide a measurable amount of relief for those suffering from RLS. But, still short of being considered a cure.

With no real therapeutic or medical solutions available, the medical community continues to resist the use of prescription drugs. This condition is not life threatening and the drugs used to suppress the symptoms comes associated with some very serious warning labels. Additionally, a condition known as augmentation is also a very serious concern. It appears that the medications used to treat RLS tend to become less effective in time. The relief offered by prescription medication tends to wear off or the symptoms begin to return earlier the following day leaving the medical practitioner to prescribe additional and even more dangerous drugs.

When taking into consideration the countless of people suffering from this condition, it can be ignored as a disease no more. With no conventional cure in sight, the pharmaceutical companies continue to mass produce their very profitable and dangerous drugs while medical professionals rush to find an alternate and permanent solution. Now, more than ever, there is much being discovered and more options offered for those suffering from this awful condition.
