Visiting A Chiropractor - The Natural Choice

Visiting a chiropractor is the natural choice over drugs or surgery for the relief and restoration of function following musculoskeletal injury. Because it goes to the root of the problem, chiropractic therapy may be the better option in the long term. The profession was originated by Canadian D. D. Palmer (b 1845, d 1913) towards the end of the nineteenth century. It is the third largest health profession behind medicine and dentistry.

The cost of a chiropractic visit is about the same as an evening out for a few beers and a curry. Chiropractic treatment is covered by many personal health plans so it makes sense to shop around.

Although the majority of people visit a chiropractor for the relief of low back pain, they are also trained to treat whiplash. Normally associated with high-impact traffic accidents, whiplash can occur from a diving accident, sports injury or mishap at work, any time the body experiences a forceful, sudden jerk that stretches the soft tissue around the spine.

A visit to the chiropractor should be arranged if any of the following symptoms occur: Headache; pain in the face or jaw; pain or stiffness in the neck or shoulder, upper limbs or legs; blurred vision; difficulty swallowing; nausea; numbness and tingling; vertigo or ringing in the ears. Sometimes symptoms can take months or even years to develop. Whiplash injury can result in subtle changes in the flow of blood and cerebral spinal fluid. Left untreated, conditions such as anxiety, depression and agoraphobia can result.

For the initial appointment, expect to be there for half an hour to 45 minutes. Further appointments will take less time. Wear loose clothing and comfortable clothes. You will be asked for yours and your family's medical history. He will want to know what major illnesses you have had and if you have had any surgical procedures. He will ask what medications you are taking, prescription or otherwise, and your dietary, exercise and work habits. He will also want to know how the injury occurred and how you have been managing it.

The practitioner will assess your posture and how you move, especially around the affected area. With you lying down on a special examination table, he will probe the soft tissues in your limbs and spine. Having assessed your condition, he may begin to manipulate the bones and soft tissues to relieve the immediate pain and improve your range of movement. It may take several visits.

If the injury is serious or if symptoms have gone untreated for some time, your practitioner may undertake corrective manipulation of the spine and associated muscles and tissues. Even after pain relief has been achieved and normal function has been restored, maintenance or supportive care may be needed to consolidate progress so far and maintain the benefit that has been achieved.

Making chiropractor Richmond Hill a habit and visiting once or twice a year to maintain optimum spinal health is good practice. Your practitioner is trained to pick up problems before they develop into something serious.
